Our Expectations

As a class, we spent a week discussing and deciding what behaviors we need from each other to help us all have a fun and successful school year. Here is what we agreed upon.

Northside Pride Week!

Here are your dress-up days for the week...
Tuesday: America Day! Wear red, white, and blue
Wednesday: Inside Out Day! Wear your clothes inside out
Thursday: Comfy Day! Wear your comfy clothes
Friday: Spirit Day! Wear GREEN AND WHITE!!!

Reviewing Prior Skills

We have spent some time reviewing skills that were learned in previous grades. Correctly writing sentences is a life-skill and will be an expectation of each student in our class. Please check over graded work and homework to help polish this skill.

Math Time

We spent last week getting back in the swing of math time by playing Close to 100. The game requires strategic thinking, addition and subtraction skills, and teamwork.
You can play at home with just a regular deck of cards. Here's how...
*Draw 6 cards
*Make two 2-digit numbers
*Add the numbers to get the sum (total)
*Subtract the sum (total) from 100
*Your score is the difference between 100 and your sum (total)
*If you want to try to get a lower score, rearrange your cards and try again
*The object of the game is to get the lowest score, just like golf.

WELCOME BACK!

We are off and running in 4th grade! This week students have practiced the expected school behaviors, our class routines, and have worked to build a community of friends. It has been a short, but  busy week!
Next week we will continue to build our community, but will also begin math, reading, writing, and social studies lessons. You will see on grade-level homework assignments. Please talk to your child about the homework each evening. Homework is a district expectation. Students are expected to have homework completed and returned the following morning. Watch for the homework log each evening to let you know the homework assignment. Students who do not return their homework (completed) will sit out at recess to fulfill their responsibility. This is a 4th grade rule.
Also, take some time this weekend to write a few addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems for your child. Have them solve the problems independently. They should be able to solve 4 digit addition problems (that require carrying), 4 digit subtraction problems (that require borrowing), one digit multiplication problems, and two digits divided by one digit. For example; 2367+9248=?  5453-1249=?  8x6=?  36/6=?
Ask your child to explain their process for solving while working. I cannot stress enough how important it is that your child have these skills secure. We will not practice basic multiplying, dividing, adding and/or subtracting regularly because we must teach, and practice, 4th grade skills.
Each Monday we will take a Spelling pre-test. The test will consist of the words for the week. The weekly words are sent home on the pre-test and on the back of the homework log. Please practice the words at home. The final test will be each Friday. Because we are out of school Monday, we will not start spelling until August 28.
Friday folder forms with behavior and academic information will begin coming home next Friday. Please look for those forms each week and go over them with your child, then please sign the form. Your child will return the form on Monday.
Although headphones were not on the supply list, your child will need headphones each day. Please send headphones with your child as soon as you can.
If you get a chance, check out the class blog. I haven’t added any pictures yet because I am still missing a few permission slips. Please return those forms on Tuesday. http://simmonsfourthgrade.blogspot.com/
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU for supporting your child so much already! Our goal is growth. All we want is for our skills to get better every single day!
Enjoy the eclipse with your family on Monday! Glasses and safety information are in the folder.

Here's what we've been up to...
