Spring is finally here!

We will be researching the US Presidents and creating a presentation to share with the class. Please don’t panic! This work will be completed AT SCHOOL! We are sending the information home so that you know what is expected of your child in writing for their final quarter of 3rd grade. We will spend the next few weeks working through the process together. Your child is welcome to do some research at home and bring information and/or pictures to school, but it is not expected.
As you can see, there are several school events happening in April. Please check the green folder each night for flyers.

Author Visit!

Today we had the pleasure of meeting the author of Frankie and the Missing Sweatpants, Tasha Emmons. She explained the process of getting her book illustrated and published. It was very informative and entertaining! The kids had some great questions for our visitor. Below are several pictures from her visit.

Fluency: reading smoothly

Comprehension: understanding what is being read and being able to talk about meaning of text

Follow these steps to help with fluency and comprehension!

v     Read 1 page out loud.
v     Talk about what the text meant. (Don’t just repeat
what the text said, but what did it mean? Put it in your
       own words.)
v     Re-read the page out loud.
v     If the reading still sounds choppy, read the page a third
       time.
v     Follow those steps for each page in the book.
v     Read the book multiple times a week.

This process will work best for short, picture books.

Check this out!

Taylee showed off her awesome thinking skills on the assignment below. She used reading strategies to comprehend the text, erased completely when she made an error, wrote neatly, and labeled! By doing all of these things, Taylee has proven she has a deep level of understanding! This is what 3rd grade work should look like!

February Fun!

Brrrr! Winter is back! We have enjoyed a few warmer days at recess, but it is time to get our winter gear back out! Be sure students have hats and/or hoods, gloves, scarves, and coats so they can enjoy outside recess.
Our Valentines day party is quickly approaching and $1 is being requested to help our volunteers fund our fun! If you can send $1 with your child, we will really appreciate it. Mrs. Parmenter and Mrs. Duncan have some great games planned for our class! Let’s help them out by donating $1. J
Progress Reports will be sent home on Wednesday. Please sign and return these as soon as you can. Also, be sure you check the green folders for graded work. 3rd quarter is typically the hardest quarter for students. Please go over the skills on each piece of work. Have students redo questions they miss and re-read texts to deepen comprehension.
The monthly reading requirements have increased by 20 minutes. Please help the kids remember to read an extra 20 minutes each week.

If you are in the building for lunch, stop by and check out the students awesome work displayed in the hallway! We have their informational animal reports displayed and a poster method problem showing our math thinking. Check out the pictures for a sneak peek!
